I'm a freelance writer and specialise in the long nineteenth century. I had much fun working on various historical projects on the lives of Londoners during this time whilst studying for my PhD at Birkbeck College, London. After graduating in 2008, I wrote my first book, entitled Masculinity, Crime and Self-Defence in Victorian Literature: Duelling with Danger (2010) which will be out in paperback in March 2013. My sister book, Femininity, Crime and Self-Defence in Victorian Literature and Society: From Dagger-Fans to Suffragettes, has just been released. I've contributed to History Today and the Times Literary Supplement and I'm also the Publicity Officer for the H.G. Wells Society. As well as writing dictionary entries, I've also reviewed for journals including The Wellsian and Victorian Review.
I'm updating this website over the next week to include some interesting facts and historical curios which have appeared recently, topics related to crime, Victorians, danger and Sherlock Holmes!
