This is Judith Lee. She was the fictional creation of popular novelist, Richard Marsh, author of the weird and bracing supernatural thriller, The Beetle (1897). Some say that she is the female equivalanet of Sherlock Holmes, an independent spirit with martial arts and self-defence skills. She also reads lips, an ability which frequently intimidates her enemies. This illustration by J.R. Skelton appeared in the original stories from The Strand Magazine and depicts a moment from 'The Restaurant Napolitain'.
